6/4/09|Raining in Los Angeles!?!

This morning I†took my girls†into the backyard for a lesson about rain. This is a rare live demonstration living in Southern California. Both girls looked up and said, “Agua.” (Yes, they’re bilingual, but this isnít about bragging!!!) My husband ran outside to remind me that being outside for this short period would give my girls pneumonia. Quick to be defensive without thinking through what I was saying, I launched into a speech about how the rain is probably much more harmful than the cool temperatures and anyway it was only misting. My little students didnít know the difference between rain and mist. I went on to explain pneumonia is the least of our worries, and if he wanted to be onto something better, our pollution is so disgusting that Iím sure weíre somehow being contaminated and the girls should put their tongues back in their mouths. Then I realized I had gone too far and took my rain lesson back inside the house and to the window.

Made me think hours later, as this blog entry sat on my TO DO list, that Fijians donít have this problem. Fiji is one of the farthest places away from industrial pollution. I bet Fijian Mommies get to teach their rain lesson outside without thinking about pollution and acid rain. Maybe the warm tropical weather helps ward off paranoid Daddies too!

Actually, Fijian mommies are busy finding clean drinking water for their kids than teaching about acid rain as 1/3 of Fiji residents don’t have access to this vital resource.

Please, let’s not continue to idealize this false notion of a magical land of purity where the inhabitants live in a garden of eden and all their resources are pure. What John said is true, most Fijians don’t even have access to this ‘pure’ drinking water themselves. Kind of twisted, eh?

Maybe we should be focusing more on real solutions to the global water crisis instead of pumping money into greenwashing campaigns for a product that fundamentally contributes to the problem.

FIJI Water is actually working to help bring clean water to more Fijians, which you can read more about on our blog and also on our http://www.fijiwater.com site:

We are focused on making change, not just in this area, but in conservation and investing in the Fijian economy at a time when many other companies have chosen not to. If you would like to read more about these endeavors, we would be happy to answer any questions you might have.

I think that the fijians need to have access to fresh water. It is a simple human right.
