“All journeys have secret destinations of which the traveler is unaware.” Martin Buber could have been referring to the plot of The Luxury Collection’s new short film when he wrote those immortal words.
“Here,” a 30-minute travelogue that highlights the posh amenities of three hotel locations, sees model/actress Agnyess Deyn journeying from the Equinox in Vermont to the Phoenician in Arizona to the Royal Hawaiian in Honolulu, all at the bequest of an unseen figure who delivers handwritten notes that detail her next step — row across a lake, take falconing lessons, swim in a lake-sized pool. The tone of the film is languid, mysterious, mesmerizing.
The concept of the film began as a dinner conversation between actor and jewelry designer Waris Ahluwalia, actress Tilda Swinton, and her artist companion Sandro Kopp, all of who shared a passion for travel. That passion has now been translated to the screen, with director Luca Guadagnino (I Am Love) adding a retro touch to the opulent settings, making “Here” a visual exploration of sophisticated comfort, with a dash of Hitchcockian enigma.
