In the run-up to the start of the fall fashion season, we caught up with one of our interns from this past spring’s New York Fashion Week.
Lauren Crumpecker is humming along six months later, wrapping up an internship with MTV in New York. She’s also excited about her next career move — but it’s not what you might expect.
Q: What is your best memory of Spring 2010 Fashion Week?
A: I loved meeting part of the FIJI Water team and asking them about their career path and experiences, as well as creating new friendships with the other interns. I am still in contact with Laura and Aislinn. Also seeing all the celebrities attend the shows was pretty cool!
Q: Which designer were you most impressed with and why?
A: I loved the Betsey Johnson show on Valentine’s Day. It was so creative with the hay-covered runways and saloon girl/gambling theme. She is almost 68 years old and has still managed to keep her image trendy, current, and unique. Also I got to see her signature cartwheel at the end of her fashion show!
Q: If you could give one piece of advice to a future intern, what would it be?
A: Make an effort to meet and learn about your fellow interns. I stayed in great contact with Aislinn and Laura, and it is fun to be able to meet up for dinner and reminisce about our experiences. I also would encourage future interns to stay focused and dedicated on the job. You never know who you will meet and what opportunities will arise, so it is best to always look professional.
Q: Was your internship what you expected it to be? Why or why not?
A: Yes and no. I honestly didn’t know what to expect at first. I had never been to New York City for a week or experienced Fashion Week. I was excited that we got a chance to watch all the fashion shows, which I didn’t know if we would be able to do. I knew we would be stocking fridges and the supply room, but I didn’t realize that we would be doing so much physical labor when we first arrived — unloading every single box from the van.
Q: What is one lesson you learned from being a part of Fashion Week?
A: There is SO much hard work that goes on to produce a 15-minute fashion show. Fashion isn’t all luxurious and wonderful. It is a hard industry to get to the top of and takes true dedication.
Q: Where are you currently working?
A: This summer I am interning in New York City for MTV Networks (Nickelodeon) on the Digital Marketing team as well as for The Orchard in Interactive Marketing.
Q: Do you think that your Fashion Week experience has helped you?
A: Definitely! After experiencing New York Fashion Week, it made me more curious about New York City and what else it has to offer. I applied for summer internships in the city and am working two! Although it made me realize I do not want to pursue a career in fashion, it made me become more interested in Event Marketing as well as the entertainment industry. In addition, it helped me stand apart from other candidates in interviews. Employers were very curious about my internship, and more importantly from a marketing standpoint, how I went about getting votes through uses of social media, etc.
