Serving Compassion: Enter the CityMeals Silver Spoon Ticket Giveaway

Compassion is at the heart of the CityMeals-on-Wheels mission. In that spirit, we’re giving away a pair of tickets to the inspiring — and delicious — 25th Silver Spoons Chefs’ Tribute to the person who best conveys their own compassion and kindness for those in need.

Held in honor of renowned chef and CityMeals founder James Beard, the Silver Spoons gala dinner will be held on Monday, June 14 at Rockefeller Center in New York City.  Over 1,000 guests will come to stroll the esplanades and gardens of the famed Manhattan landmark, sample exquisite cuisine, sip champagne and cocktails, and dance until midnight. All proceeds from the event will support CityMeals-on-Wheels’ efforts to bring nutritious meals to the home-bound elderly.

How to Enter

Those who care about food almost as much as they care about people are invited to enter by answering the following question:

“For whom or what do you feel the most compassion, and how do you honor that compassion?”

We’re looking for answers between 100 and 250 words in length that best capture the way you feel for someone or something that’s vulnerable and dear to your heart, and what you do to help.  So if someone in your neighborhood is struggling with an illness and you try to be there for them, or there’s a problem in your community that you’re trying to help solve, be sure to tell us about it. We’re looking for heart, authenticity, and the kind of inspiration that comes from true compassion.

Nichole
The one person I am most compassionate towards in my life is my Grandfather. Ever since I was little, my Grandpa has done nothing but inspire me. I remember sitting at the kitchen table over Sunday morning brunch while he read the obituaries to make sure he wasn’t in there. After he knew he was definitely alive, he would put down the newspaper and lecture me about life, college, men, and family. Although I was only a child, I knew his words would stick with me forever. His life made a drastic change when he had a heart attack a few years back. Now, I want to be his inspiration and I want to make him proud so he knows that all those Sunday chats were not wasted. Because he can no longer do yard work, he has taken up building birdhouses. In my free time I help around the house then sit with my Grandpa as he builds and paints and I tell him all about my life. Seeing the smile on his face when I told him about my studying abroad experience or his pride when I graduated college made all the work worth it. I am living my life for me and doing what makes me happy, but in my opinion, what’s the point if you can’t be with and support the people you love?
