Earth Day is an important day at FIJI Water, but our commitment is to celebrate it all year long through our support of environmental and community giving. Our company is committed to responsible environmental stewardship, and it drives everything we do.
One project we’re especially proud of is our protection of the Sovi Basin. Located on the Fijian island of Viti Levu, the Sovi Basin is a 50,000-acre expanse of some of the last low-lying rain forest in the country, and a very important part of the Polynesia/Micronesia biodiversity “hotspot.” Home to myriad plant and animal species found nowhere else, the 34 biodiversity hotspots scattered across the globe are stunning examples of nature’s creative genius: This hotspot alone is home to 3,300 unique species of plants. When it became clear that the Sovi Basin was threatened by logging interests, FIJI Water and partner Conservation International acted quickly to protect it. With $5 million committed, FIJI is ensuring that this critical habitat and its wildlife will remain protected in perpetuity, while at the same time giving the whole planet a boost: By preserving the forest (via efforts including reforestation programs), enough CO2 will be sequestered to equal approximately 2 million cars kept off the road.
FIJI Water is also a proud to be the fifth-largest member of 1% for the Planet, the ground-breaking organization whose members contribute 1% of their profits to environmental causes. Founded in 2002, 1% for the Planet began with 21 contributing business and now numbers over 1,200 in 38 different countries. For Earth Day, organization chief executive Terry Kellogg shared his thoughts on corporate environmental commitment in today’s Huffington Post.
