Doing Well by Doing Good: We Are Proud to Join 1% for the Planet

We have huge news! As part of our long-standing sustainability commitment, we’ve joined 1% for the Planet, a global alliance of companies who pledge 1% of their annual sales directly to non-profit organizations focused on sustainability.

1% for the Planet’s mission is to build and support an alliance of businesses financially committed to creating a healthy planet. Currently, it’s a global movement of 1,116 companies that donate 1% of their sales to a network of 1,877 environmental organizations worldwide… and growing. We’re incredibly honored to be the first premium artesian bottled water company to join 1% and one of the alliance’s top five brand members based on annual revenue and environmental contributions.

Becoming a member is part of our ongoing effort to help protect the environment. Among a number of initiatives, we’re working to preserve the Sovi Basin, the largest remaining lowland rainforest in the South Pacific, a project that will keep 10 million tons of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. We’ve also teamed up with the people of Fiji and Conservation International to work on our major reforestation project. Planting of the first 250 acres began in October 2009 and another 1,000 acres will be planted over the coming years. Here’s a video highlighting our Sovi Basin project:

If you know us, you know that we’re passionate about doing well by doing good. We know as a business, we’re responsible for giving back to the communities where we live and work. We couldn’t be more proud of our pledge to 1% for the Planet.

Given the present pushback on Fiji water's claims to earth-consciousness I can't help but respond in kind. Because I live in Europe where bottled water is both a cultural "requisite" and a genuine environmental curse, it only seems right to point out that: - Water in bottles is much more costly than that from the tap. - Claims of health benefits for bottled waters are shaky at best. - Hidden costs of bottled waters are huge. These include recycling failures (what goes into the plastics recycling bin may - or may not - actually BE recycled, ask any retired waste management employee, anywhere; not to speak of the substantial fraction of plastics that never make it to the recycling stream at all); trash cleanup from public and private spaces; intangibles such as degradation of human spaces worldwide because of discarded bottles; the thousands of square miles of ocean surface obliterated in floating plastics. - A useful primer: the Riyadh-Al Khobar highway in Saudi Arabia where the rolling sands are studded with millions of discarded water bottles. Even though plastics incorporating breakdown components permit these bottles to "decompose" in the sun, the matter of how the resulting micro debris continues to play in the ecosystem is worth bringing to the foreground. The bottled water culture is a recipe for disaster for all. Fiji may burnish its image - which is what this "Join 1% for the Planet" really comes down to - but what Fiji really provides to all of us is a stunning model of why bottled water is wrong for the planet and for all of us. The virtue of "distance" trumpeted by Fiji on this site may result in water of a certain mineralogy (but no different from that obtainable from local sources and by filtering, at lower total cost) - BUT - what "distance" actually signifies in Fiji's case is one more damning element in a losing game with the planetary commons. DISTANCE: Fiji to market. DISTANCE: Chinese bottle factory to Fiji. And so on...
